Custom Drive Solution For Large Overhead Gantry Crane

Customer's Problem

A machine builder was designing a large overhead gantry crane which would need to move a large payload over very long distance

The customer had a limited amount of space to mount the drive pinion so a custom solution was required.

ATLANTA's Solution

ATLANTA was able offer our design and engineering services to develop a special pinion shaft to fit in the customer's envelope. A special material was required to ensure that shaft could support the loading generated by the system. Custom ISO 6336 / DIN 3990 gearing calculations were also provided based on the customer’s application specific requirements.

High-precision hardened & ground (HPR) racks were used for their force capacity. Two meter long racks maximized the number of screws holding the racks stationary under the high loading, while achieving a better pitch deviation per meter length. Using longer racks also reduced the number of rack sections needed and the number of rack joints, which reduced the assembly time required.

Using the ATLANTA solution, the drive requirements were met while fitting into the available design envelope.
